Seamless titanium tube is manufactured by piercing a solid titanium billet at elevated temperature, then hot-rolling and cold-drawing the pierced shell through precision dies to the final outer diameter and wall thickness. The resulting tube has no longitudinal weld seam, making it the preferred choice where material continuity, pressure containment reliability and corrosion resistance in high-duty environments are critical concerns.

Typical end-uses include shell-and-tube heat exchanger bundles, high-pressure process piping, desalination condenser tubing and hydraulic systems. Supply feasibility is reviewed per inquiry against outer diameter, wall thickness, grade and required length.

Seamless Titanium Tube Specifications

Supply ranges are presented in three tiers to distinguish industry reference, custom coordination and regular stock availability.

Grades & Materials

Grade availability is tied to manufacturing route, OD and wall thickness. Not every grade can be produced in every size.

RS

Regular Stock

Grade 1 (CP Ti), Grade 2 (CP Ti), partial Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). Available in common diameters from mill stock.

CU

Custom Coordination

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 7 (Ti-0.15Pd), Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V), Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni), Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI). Supply feasibility reviewed per order against tube diameter, wall thickness and forming route.

NT

Not Stocked As Tube

Some titanium plate grades (Grade 16, Grade 17 and others) are not standard seamless tube production grades. Availability for specific projects requires technical review. Not every plate grade transfers directly to tube form.

Standards & Technical References

Standards listed below are provided as industry references. Final standard selection must match the actual product form, material grade and order specification.

ASTM B338 / B338M — Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and Titanium Alloy Tubes for Condensers and Heat Exchangers. Applies specifically to round titanium tubes intended for heat exchanger and condenser service. Seamless route covered.

ASTM B337 / B337M — Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and Titanium Alloy Pipe. Applies to round titanium pipe for general process piping and pressure service.

Applicability of these standards to a specific order depends on tube OD, wall thickness, grade and intended service. Square, rectangular, flat, corrugated, capillary or enhanced-surface titanium tubes are not directly covered by B338/B337 and should be evaluated against the applicable product requirement or agreed specification.

Manufacturing Route

1

Billet Preparation

Solid titanium billet of the required grade is inspected, machined to diameter and heated.

2

Piercing

The heated billet is pierced on a rotary piercing mill to create a hollow shell.

3

Hot Rolling

The pierced shell is hot-rolled to reduce diameter and wall thickness.

4

Cold Drawing

Cold drawing through precision dies achieves final OD, wall thickness and surface finish.

5

Finishing

Annealing, straightening, end facing, nondestructive inspection and length cutting per order.

Typical Application Areas

Seamless titanium tubes are selected where pressure containment, material continuity and corrosion resistance under demanding conditions are the primary requirements.

HX

Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

Titanium tube bundles for corrosive process fluids, seawater, brackish water and chemical heat exchanger service. Grade 2 is the most common grade for this application.

PP

High-Pressure Process Piping

Corrosive media transfer lines in chemical processing, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical plants. Seamless construction is preferred for pressure-class systems where no weld seam is permitted.

DS

Desalination & Power Generation

Titanium condenser tubing and auxiliary piping in MED desalination plants, surface condensers and flue-gas desulfurization systems.

HY

Hydraulic & Instrumentation Lines

Titanium hydraulic tubing in marine and subsea systems, where corrosion resistance and high-pressure capability are both required.

Quality & Documentation

Available documentation is coordinated against the order specification and applicable requirements.

  • Material test certificates for titanium billet and finished tube, including chemical composition verification and mechanical property reporting where required.
  • Nondestructive testing coordination: ultrasonic testing (UT) for wall thickness and internal defects, eddy current testing (ET) for surface and near-surface defects, hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing per code.
  • Dimensional inspection reports covering OD tolerance, wall thickness tolerance, ovality, straightness and end preparation.
  • Heat or lot traceability records where available and applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which seamless titanium tube grades are available from stock?

Grade 1 (commercially pure titanium), Grade 2 and partial Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) seamless tubes are available from mill stock in common diameters within the 10 – 273 mm OD range. Other grades including Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 7, Grade 9 and Grade 12 are produced to order and their feasibility depends on the specific OD, wall thickness and forming route.

What does Sch 40 mean for titanium tube wall thickness?

Sch 40 is a nominal wall thickness schedule reference used in pipe and tube standards. For a given outer diameter, Sch 40 defines a nominal wall thickness value. It is provided here as a default reference only. Final wall thickness for a specific order must be confirmed against the actual OD, the product specification and the order requirements. Not every size in the 10 – 273 mm OD range is produced with Sch 40 wall as standard stock.

What is the difference between seamless and welded titanium tube?

Seamless tube is produced by piercing a solid titanium billet and cold-drawing the pierced shell to final diameter. There is no longitudinal weld seam. Seamless tubes are preferred for high-pressure, high-availability and corrosion-critical applications. Welded tubes are produced by rolling titanium strip into tubular form and longitudinally welding the seam. Welded tubes can cover larger diameters and are generally more economical for structural or lower-pressure uses.

What outer diameter range do you supply for seamless titanium tube?

The confirmed outer diameter range for seamless titanium tubes is 10 – 273 mm. Not every diameter within this range is stocked as regular stock. Common sizes are available from mill inventory, while non-standard diameters within the range can be coordinated as custom production.

Can seamless titanium tubes be bent, flanged or fitted?

Yes. Seamless titanium tubes can be bent, flanged, threaded, grooved or fitted with pipe fittings depending on the grade, OD, wall thickness and required operation. Feasibility and minimum bend radius should be confirmed per inquiry. Titanium welding and tube forming can be coordinated for downstream fabrication.
