Welded titanium tube is produced by cold-rolling or hot-rolling titanium strip into a circular form, then longitudinally welding the seam (typically TIG or high-frequency welding) and sizing the resulting tube to the required outer diameter and wall thickness. Unlike seamless tube, welded tube does not require piercing a solid billet, so it can be produced at larger diameters more economically and with lower forming loads.

Typical applications include large-diameter structural tubing, low-pressure process piping, condenser and auxiliary exchanger tubes where the size advantage matters more than seam-free continuity, and marine or desalination systems using larger-diameter titanium components. Supply is coordinated with qualified pipe mills per inquiry against OD, wall thickness, grade and length.

Welded Titanium Tube Specifications

Supply ranges are presented in three tiers to distinguish industry reference, custom coordination and regular stock availability.

Grades & Materials

Welded tube grade availability depends primarily on the titanium strip grade used as feedstock and on the welding route.

RS

Regular Stock

Grade 1 (CP Ti), Grade 2 (CP Ti), partial Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). Available in common welded sizes from mill stock.

CU

Custom Coordination

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 7, Grade 9, Grade 12 and other titanium or titanium alloy strip grades. Supply feasibility reviewed per order against tube diameter, wall thickness and strip availability. Not every plate grade transfers directly to welded tube form.

Standards & Technical References

Standards listed below are provided as industry references. Final standard selection must match the actual product form, material grade and order specification.

ASTM B338 / B338M — Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and Titanium Alloy Tubes for Condensers and Heat Exchangers. Applies specifically to round titanium tubes (both seamless and welded) intended for heat exchanger and condenser service.

ASTM B337 / B337M — Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and Titanium Alloy Pipe. Applies to round titanium pipe for general process piping and pressure service.

Applicability of these standards to a specific order depends on tube OD, wall thickness, grade and intended service. Square, rectangular, flat, corrugated, capillary or enhanced-surface titanium tubes are not directly covered by B338/B337 and should be evaluated against the applicable product requirement or agreed specification.

Manufacturing Route

1

Strip Preparation

Titanium strip of the required grade is slit to width, inspected and conditioned.

2

Forming

The strip is progressively cold-formed or hot-formed through rolls into a circular tubular shape with an open longitudinal seam.

3

Welding

The longitudinal seam is joined by TIG welding, plasma welding or high-frequency induction welding. Weld route matched to grade and wall thickness.

4

Sizing & Finishing

The welded tube is sized through roll passes to final OD and roundness, straightened, end-faced and cut to length. Nondestructive weld inspection performed.

Typical Application Areas

Welded titanium tubes are selected where the larger OD range or the cost advantage over seamless is the primary consideration, while pressure-class requirements remain moderate.

LD

Large-Diameter Piping

Low-pressure process piping, transfer lines and auxiliary systems where diameters exceed the practical seamless range.

ST

Structural Tubing

Frames, towers, support structures and load-bearing members where titanium corrosion resistance is required but pressure containment is not the primary design factor.

DS

Desalination & Power Generation

Larger-diameter titanium auxiliary piping, condenser waterboxes and flue-gas desulfurization system components.

MH

Marine & Offshore

Corrosion-resistant titanium tubing for seawater systems, brackish water handling and platform auxiliary structures.

Quality & Documentation

Available documentation is coordinated against the order specification and applicable requirements.

  • Material test certificates for titanium strip feedstock and finished welded tube, including chemical composition and mechanical property reporting where required.
  • Weld inspection coordination: eddy current testing (ET) or ultrasonic testing (UT) of the longitudinal weld seam, hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing per code, visual weld inspection and weld procedure documentation.
  • Dimensional inspection reports covering OD tolerance, wall thickness tolerance, roundness, straightness and end preparation.
  • Heat or lot traceability records where available and applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which welded titanium tube grades are available from stock?

Grade 1 (commercially pure titanium), Grade 2 and partial Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) welded tubes are available from mill stock in common sizes within the 6.35 – 610 mm OD range. Other grades including Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 7, Grade 9 and Grade 12 are produced to order and their feasibility depends on the specific OD, wall thickness and strip feedstock availability.

Can welded titanium tubes be used for high-pressure service?

Seamless titanium tubes are preferred for high-pressure and high-availability applications where a weld seam cannot be accepted. Welded titanium tubes are appropriate for lower-pressure systems, structural uses and service where the larger OD range or cost advantage of welded construction is more important than seam-free continuity. Pressure-class suitability should be confirmed against the project specification and code requirements.

What outer diameter range do you supply for welded titanium tube?

The confirmed outer diameter range for welded titanium tubes is 6.35 – 610 mm. Not every diameter within this range is stocked as regular stock. Common welded sizes are available from mill inventory, while non-standard diameters within the range can be coordinated as custom production.

What does Sch 40 mean for welded titanium tube wall thickness?

Sch 40 is a nominal wall thickness schedule reference. It is provided here as a default reference only. Final wall thickness for a specific order must be confirmed against the actual OD, the product specification and the order requirements. Not every size in the 6.35 – 610 mm OD range is produced with Sch 40 wall as standard stock.
