Corrugated and rifled titanium tubes are round titanium tubes that have been secondarily formed with periodic external corrugations (wave-like surface features) or internal rifling (spiral grooves inside the tube). These surface features deliberately increase turbulence in the flowing fluid, raising heat-transfer performance compared to smooth round tubes. The corrugated or rifled geometry is added to a base smooth round tube (typically seamless, sometimes welded) as a secondary forming step.

Supply is coordinated per inquiry against the base tube OD, wall thickness, grade, corrugation or rifling pattern (pitch, depth, geometry) and required length. The specific pattern must be confirmed against the heat exchanger design.

Grades & Materials

Corrugated or rifled tube grade is determined by the base smooth round tube used as starting material.

RS

Regular Stock

Grade 1 (CP Ti), Grade 2 (CP Ti), partial Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). Base tube available from stock; secondary forming performed to order.

CU

Custom Coordination

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 7, Grade 9, Grade 12 and other grades. Both base tube production and secondary forming coordinated per order.

Standards & Technical References

Corrugated and rifled titanium tubes are secondarily formed from smooth round seamless or welded tubes. The relevant base tube standards are the same round-tube specifications (ASTM B338 / B337) that apply to smooth round titanium tubes. The corrugated or rifled surface features themselves are not directly covered by these standards and should be evaluated against the heat exchanger design specification, forming feasibility and inspection criteria agreed for the order.

Typical Application Areas

HX

Enhanced Heat Exchangers

Titanium corrugated and rifled tubes for heat exchangers where enhanced heat transfer is required to reduce equipment size or improve performance.

CN

Condensers & Evaporators

Enhanced-performance condenser and evaporator tubing in desalination, power generation and chemical processing systems.

CH

Chemical Process Systems

Corrugated titanium tube bundles for corrosive chemical process heat exchange where both corrosion resistance and enhanced heat transfer are required.

Quality & Documentation

  • Material test certificates for the base smooth titanium tube.
  • Forming inspection: corrugation or rifling pitch and depth verification, wall thinning check at formed locations, dimensional verification of OD after forming.
  • Pressure testing documentation for the finished tube per specification.
  • Heat or lot traceability records where available and applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between corrugated and rifled titanium tubes?

Corrugated titanium tubes have periodic surface features (wave-like or folded) on the outside of the tube wall. Rifled titanium tubes have internal spiral grooves cut or rolled into the inside wall of the tube. Both types serve to increase fluid turbulence and heat transfer. Some designs combine both features.

Are corrugated titanium tubes covered by ASTM B338?

ASTM B338 and B337 are standard specifications for smooth round titanium tubes. Corrugated and rifled titanium tubes are secondarily formed from smooth base tubes and the surface features themselves are not directly covered by these standards. The base tube must meet its applicable standard; the formed surface features are evaluated against the heat exchanger design specification and order requirements.

Are corrugated titanium tubes stocked?

Smooth base tubes may be available from stock (Grade 1, Grade 2, partial Grade 5 in common sizes). Corrugation or rifling forming itself is performed to order. The finished corrugated or rifled configuration is not maintained as regular stock.

Does corrugation weaken the tube?

Forming corrugations or rifling introduces localized wall thinning and changes the tube's pressure capability. The forming process and the final tube pressure rating must be reviewed together. Feasibility and pressure capability are confirmed against the base tube OD, wall thickness, grade and specific corrugation or rifling pattern.
